AMDISS Urges Media to Play a Key Role in Addressing Climate Change

The Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) has called on media professionals to intensify efforts in raising awareness and driving action on climate change, highlighting the critical role of the media in shaping public understanding and influencing positive environmental outcomes.

This came during AMDISS’s one Media Stakeholders Forum on Environment and Climate Change in Juba supported by Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA).

The event, themed “The Role of Radio in Raising Awareness of Climate Change and Environmental Issues in South Sudan,” attracted over 40 participants from government, civil society, academia, research institutes, and media.

In her opening speech, Ayaa Irene Lokang, Director of AMDISS, stressed the global significance of climate change and the impact it has on both humans and wildlife.

She emphasized the urgency for South Sudan to actively engage in the conversation on climate change, pointing to the floods and droughts affecting various regions in the country.

Ayaa Irene Lokang called for increased media efforts in amplifying environmental issues, recognizing radio as a key tool in raising awareness.

Jacob Atem, NPA’s representative, reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting media and civil society despite funding challenges posed by reduced USAID support.

The forum aimed to highlight the media’s positive role in promoting awareness about climate change and environmental issues.
