The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya and one of Africa’s most respected statesmen.

On behalf of the African Union, its organs, and institutions, the Chairperson extends heartfelt condolences to the Odinga family, the Government and people of Kenya, and all Africans mourning this profound loss.

“H.E. Raila Odinga was a towering figure in the political landscape of Kenya and a passionate advocate for democracy, human rights, and inclusive development,” said Chairperson Youssouf.

“His decades of leadership and unwavering dedication to justice and democratic reform left a lasting impact not only in Kenya but across the African continent. His life’s work continues to inspire generations, including myself.”

Chairperson Youssouf highlighted Mr. Odinga’s continental contributions, particularly in his role as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

In that capacity, Mr. Odinga championed initiatives to enhance regional integration and connectivity, laying vital groundwork for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader development goals.

“Africa has lost one of its most visionary sons,” the Chairperson remarked. “His legacy of courage, resilience, and commitment to unity and progress will live on as we continue the work he so passionately believed in—a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Africa.”

The African Union stands in solidarity with the people of Kenya and the wider African family in honoring the life and legacy of H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
