The Bishop of the Pentecostal Church in Wau, John Fabiano, has called upon the people of South Sudan to embrace peace as a critical tool for overcoming the nation’s severe economic challenges.
Addressing a community dialogue held at St. Raphael Primary School in Wau on Saturday, the Bishop underscored the importance of maintaining peace at both personal and communal levels.
He urges the citizens to prioritize unity despite the ongoing financial hardships that have deeply impacted families and communities across the country.
Bishop Fabiano’s message centered on the idea that peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but a profound sense of spiritual and relational well-being.
He highlighted that true peace comes from an individual’s relationship with God and radiates outward to the people around them.
“Peace means having a good relationship with God and those around you,” said Bishop Fabiano. “A family that lacks peace will inevitably experience misunderstandings and conflicts, especially in times of economic hardship.Â
But when there is peace, even the toughest challenges can be navigated together.”
Economic Hardship Fuels Tensions
South Sudan has faced persistent economic difficulties, exacerbated by the prolonged civil war, inflation, and widespread poverty.
In this context, many households have been pushed to the brink, struggling with rising living costs, unemployment, and limited access to basic services.Â
The bishop warned that these stresses can lead to frustration, anger, and domestic conflicts if not addressed peacefully.
Bishop Fabiano stressed that economic hardships should not be an excuse for division and hostility, but rather an opportunity for communities to unite and support one another.
He pointed out that peace is essential for building strong and resilient families and communities, which are better equipped to face collective challenges.
“With peace, we can defeat the economic difficulties we face,” he said. “When people are united when families and neighbors work together in harmony, they become stronger and more capable of overcoming the trials that life throws at them.”
Peace as a Pillar of Development
The bishop also emphasized that peace is a critical factor in national development. According to him, a peaceful society can create and maintain an environment conducive to growth and prosperity.Â
He noted that countries that have experienced long periods of conflict often struggle with rebuilding not only their economies but also the trust and cooperation necessary for social and economic progress.
“Peace is the foundation upon which development is built. Without it, we cannot hope to prosper or grow as a nation,” Bishop Fabiano explained.
“Let us not be divided by our economic hardships but instead come together to create a peaceful and stable environment where development opportunities can flourish.”
Call for Spiritual Reflection
In addition to addressing the socio-economic challenges, Bishop Fabiano urged the faithful to turn to God in these difficult times.
He emphasized that spiritual reflection and prayer can provide individuals with the inner peace needed to navigate external difficulties.
“Peace begins within each of us, and that peace comes from our faith in God. We must seek Him in prayer, for He is the ultimate source of peace in our hearts and our communities,” the bishop said.
He called on the congregation and the wider community to engage in acts of kindness and compassion, particularly toward those who are most affected by the economic crisis.
“We must show love to one another, support our neighbors, and help those in need. This is what God wants from us – to live in peace, love, and unity,” he urged.
A Message for the Youth
Bishop Fabiano also directed a specific message to the youth, urging them to be ambassadors of peace in their communities.
He encouraged young people to resist the temptations of violence and instead become role models for peacebuilding in their neighborhoods and schools.
“You, the youth, are the future of South Sudan,” he said. “Your actions today will shape the tomorrow of this nation. Be the generation that chooses peace over conflict, unity over division. Lead by example and show your elders that it is possible to live in peace even when times are hard.”
Looking Ahead
Bishop Fabiano concluded his message with a hopeful outlook, expressing his belief that South Sudan can overcome its current difficulties if the people remain united in peace and purpose.
He called on leaders in all sectors of society – from government officials to religious figures – to champion peace as the key to South Sudan’s future stability and prosperity.
“We have a long road ahead, but with peace, we will find the strength to walk it together,” the bishop said. “Let us hold on to that hope and work every day to build a more peaceful and prosperous South Sudan.”
The bishop’s words resonated with many attendees at the community dialogue, with several community leaders expressing their agreement with his call for unity and peaceful co-existence, regardless of the economic circumstances.
His message continues to be echoed across local radio stations, with faith-based organizations amplifying the appeal for peace and harmony.
