Traders in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, are struggling with high transportation costs that are squeezing their profits. Viola Night, a local businesswoman, explained that although she buys goods at fair prices, poor road conditions and transport costs eat into her earnings.

“I pay boda boda transport fees for goods, but when I sell, I barely break even,” she said. Many traders face similar difficulties, with some unable to afford basic transportation for their goods.

Another trader, Ifere Vicky, highlighted the impact of foreign currency on prices. “Many goods are bought in U.S. dollars, driving up costs in the market,” she stated.

For example, she buys oil in bulk at 200,000 SSP, only to sell smaller portions at a significantly higher price, with slim profit margins.

Hellen Abau, who sells vegetables and sorghum, lamented that the rising prices of essentials are making it harder to turn a profit. “Everything is expensive, and we’re struggling to survive,” she said.

Ihiju Rebecca also urged consumers to adjust, noting that both traders and buyers are facing tough times. “We are all managing with small profits,” she said. “The market is tough, and transport costs are draining us.”
