Mismanagement Costs South Sudan Millions in Lost Resource Revenue

More than 4,300 teachers in Eastern Equatoria State are set to receive their salary arrears for December 2023, following a year-long delay. The Director General for Primary and Secondary Education, Keleto Simpliso, praised the teachers for their dedication despite the financial challenges they faced.

In a statement to media on Thursday, Simpliso acknowledged the sacrifices teachers have made, working for over a year without pay.

“Teachers have worked tirelessly, struggling to feed their families while continuing to educate children. This commitment is essential for the future of South Sudan,” he stated.

“Even without salaries, our teachers have shown resilience, continuing to teach because they believe in the future of our children. We appreciate their dedication and encourage them to persevere as we work towards better conditions.”

Meanwhile, Barnabas Lokutai, Director General in the Ministry of General Education, noted the numerous challenges the ministry faces in addressing the salary delays.

“The delay in salary payments is a significant challenge, but we encourage our teachers to be patient. Conditions will improve, and we must continue working for the good of our children,” he said.

“The delays are due to issues at the national level, but we encourage teachers to remain patient and focused. We are committed to resolving these issues and ensuring that the education system improves for the benefit of our children.”
