Over 700 young people in Western Equatoria State (WES) have successfully graduated from a transformative Community-Based Agriculture Value Chain Training Program, aimed at empowering them with essential skills for sustainable livelihoods.
The program, led by the Star Trust Organization, culminated in a vibrant ceremony held on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in agricultural and economic development in the region.
The training, part of the SEED4Y initiative, equipped the youths with practical knowledge in honey production, poultry farming, piggery, goat keeping, and liquid soap processing.
These diverse skill sets are designed to boost local agricultural production and create income-generating opportunities for the participants.
In his keynote address, Mr. Binza Joel, Director of Star Trust Organization, emphasized the long-term vision of the program. “This initiative has already benefited 700 youths in Yambio and Nzara counties, but our mission extends beyond these areas.
“We are committed to expanding this program to all counties, bomas, and payams across Western Equatoria to ensure our youth are meaningfully engaged in productive agriculture,” Mr. Joel said.
The guest of honor, Hon. Yona Robert, State Minister of Cooperatives and Rural Development, lauded the graduates for their dedication and urged them to explore the power of cooperatives.
“Cooperatives are the backbone of rural development,” Hon. Yona remarked. “I encourage all of you to work together to uplift our communities and contribute to the growth of our local economies.”
The event also showcased high-quality products produced by the youth enterprise groups, including honey and liquid soap. These displays impressed the audience and highlighted the practical outcomes of the training, demonstrating the potential for economic transformation through agriculture.
Mr. Jacob Ginaba, a local community leader, commended Star Trust Organization for their efforts, stating, “This training is a lifeline for our youth, enabling them to generate income and improve their livelihoods.
“We urge Star Trust to continue this excellent work and extend their outreach to include more youths across the state.”
Star Trust Organization also expressed deep gratitude to UNDP South Sudan and the Netherlands Embassy for their invaluable support of the SEED4Y initiative.
“Their contributions have been instrumental in empowering our youth and fostering sustainable development in Western Equatoria,” the organization’s management said.
This groundbreaking program is poised to play a critical role in reducing unemployment, promoting food security, and encouraging youth-led entrepreneurship, setting the foundation for a brighter future in Western Equatoria.
