Mayendit County Mourns Death of Former Commissioner Hon. James Gatluak Chuol, age 59
Mayendit County in Unity State is mourning the death of former county commissioner Hon. James Gatluak Chuol, who served as the first Commissioner of Mayendit County from 2002 to 2008.
Tributes continue to pour in on social media, with many describing him as a great leader who made a lasting contribution to the community and the wider Unity State.
The death was confirmed by his eldest son, Gatmai Gatluak Chuol, who said the family is deeply saddened by the loss of their father.
“With profound sorrow and heavy hearts, the family of Major General James Gatluak Chuol Jut announces his passing,” Gatmai said.
According to the family, Hon. James Gatluak Chuol passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment following a heart attack. He first fell ill on December 18, 2025, while at his duty station at Rubkong Military Barracks in Leer County, where he was serving as the Division 4B Commander of the SPLA-IO.
Major General James Gatluak Chuol Jut was born on February 12, 1967, in Kangkoi Town, Rubkuay Payam, Mayendit County, Unity State. He is remembered as a dedicated public servant, military commander, and community leader whose life was marked by service, resilience, and commitment to his people.
The family described him as a respected commander, a loving father, and a guiding figure both within his family and the wider community.
